Caputo's Market- Caputo's is a neat little market that's in the middle of a big move. Because of this, they were a little dusty and disorganized. The staff were friendly, and offered us samples of whatever kinds of cheese we requested. I love a good cheese.
They had fancy cheeses, oils, truffle items, breads, pastas, and very fancy chocolates. We ended up buying a pound of sliced Jarlsberg and three gourmet chocolate bars.
Granato's- Same idea as Caputo's but with a completely different feel. Granato's felt like the Italian specialty foods version of WalMart, compared to Caputo's traditional corner grocery. Still, the staff were nice and the selection was good, if different. They didn't have nearly the chocolate selection of Caputo's but they did have more drinks and baked goods.
We bought Sanpellegrino Aranciatas, a little bottle of red soda called Sanbitter, and a package of biscottis there. The little red soda ended up being a nasty, bitter apertif. It was like sweet, carbonated cough syrup, but not syrupy. I'm not blaming it on Granato, but the stuff was horrible. Anyway, it's no big deal. I really bought it for its neat, art-deco-styled bottle, which now lives on my office shelf.
Southeast Market
- A great Asian market at 9th S. and 4th E. It was a big place, and they had lots of neat stuff. Some of the items that caught my eye were whole barbequed ducks, Asian grapefruit bigger than my head, dried frozen fish heads, huge 42" woks, and many other wonderful things.
We walked out with instant miso soup packets, Ramune (marble sodas), cream-filled koala crackers, a tub of teriyaki nori sheets, a couple of big bags of fortune cookies, a jar of sushi pickled ginger slices, a jar of wasabi mayonnaise, and some wonton papers. And more, I think, but I don't remember the rest of it now.
Finally, a fun comparison of vacations with Crystal versus vacations with children.
If it seems that I have a chip on my shoulder, it may just be because I didn't sleep much at all on the trip with the kids to St. George. And that'll taint anything, am I right, folks?
| Crystal (In Salt Lake) | The Kids (In Southern Utah) |
| Constantly wants my attention. (It's a good thing.) | Constantly need my attention to keep them from getting into situations where they may die. |
| Doesn't scream, run, kick, and need a personal flotation device for swimming in a regular pool. | Harrison screams, kicks, and scratches when in the presence of a pool of water larger than a Volkswagon. Rachel is more game, but won't let go of Daddy. Yes, the PFDs really were necessary. |
| Eats nice food at a nice restaurant eagerly. | Eat anything at all unusual reluctantly, make faces, complain, spill drinks frequently, beg for my food and then don't eat it, make me wish I'd left them in the car. |
| We go do things. Lots of things, because all we have to do is talk about what we want to do and then leave. | More time spent in the hotel room than intended, because the kids feel like they should have a say in where we go and what we do. And then they don't want to use the bathroom before we leave. And then they need to be reminded to wear coats when it's cold outside. And they want a drink before we go, because the drinks in the car aren't good enough. And then one of them trips on the way to the car and cries. |
| Crystal lets me sleep when I'm tired, because she's probably tired, too. It's nice. | Harrison thinks that as long as there is some light in the room, he doesn't have to lay down, shut up, and go to sleep. |
| When Crystal feels the need, she gets out of bed and walks to the bathroom. | The kids wear pullups. Not as bad as diapers, but Crystal wins handily. Again. |
| When I'm grumpy, Crystal speaks softly and is tender with me, which makes me want to let her have her way, whatever that is at the time. | Daddy? Grumpy? Let's poke him until he makes us cry! |
| She's pretty. | They're cute, sometimes. Pretty wins. |
| The, uh, other stuff. | No "other stuff" with kids around. Too tired anyway. |
"Ok," I hear you saying, "but aren't kids a joy to be around for their sense of wonder and curiousity?" Yes. I've got the best kids in the world, and I love being a Daddy. The above is firmly tongue-in-cheek.
